['tristən də 'kuːnə, englisch], Inselgruppe im südlichen Atlantischen Ozean, gehört politisch zur britischen Kronkolonie Sankt Helena; etwa auf halbem Wege zwischen Südafrika und Südamerika, umfasst neben der gleichnamigen Hauptinsel die Inseln Inaccessible (10 km2), Nightingale (2,6 km2) und, über 400 km südsüdöstlich, Gough (91 km2; Wetterstation). Bewohnt ist nur die Hauptinsel (98 km2, 290 Einwohner), die aus einem großen, 2 060 m hohen Vulkan besteht, der als erloschen galt, jedoch 1961 ausbrach. Die Bevölkerung (Mischlinge), 1961-63 wegen des Vulkanausbruchs evakuiert, lebt von Kartoffel- und Obstanbau sowie Schafzucht und Fischerei (Langusten). Sie wird über den Seeweg von Kapstadt her versorgt. - Die Inselgruppe wurde 1506 durch den portugiesischen Admiral Tristão da Cunha (* um 1460, ✝ 1540) entdeckt, 1816 von Großbritannien in Besitz genommen und 1938 der Kronkolonie Sankt Helena angegliedert.
